Flowers and Trees, a Silly Symphony and the first full-color cartoon, won the Academy Award ® for Best Cartoon for 1932, the first year that the Academy offered such a category. Eventually the Silly Symphonies turned into the training ground for all Disney artists as they prepared for the advent of animated feature films. It featured different casts of characters in each film and enabled animators to experiment with stories that relied less on the gags and quick humor of the Mickey cartoons and more on mood, emotion, and musical themes. Not one to rest on his laurels, Walt Disney soon produced another series-the Silly Symphonies-to go with the Mickey series. The new character was immediately popular, and, a lengthy series of Mickey Mouse cartoons followed. ![]() So, they made a third Mickey Mouse cartoon, this time with fully synchronized sound, and Steamboat Willie opened to rave reviews at the Colony Theater in New York November 18, 1928. Ub animated two Mickey Mouse cartoons, but Walt was unable to sell them because they were silent films, and sound was revolutionizing the movie industry. With his chief animator, Ub Iwerks, Walt designed the famous mouse and gave him a personality that endeared him to all. It was at the Hyperion Studio, after the loss of Oswald, that Walt had to come up with a new character, and that character was Mickey Mouse. He found an ideal piece of property on Hyperion Avenue in Hollywood, built a studio, and in 1926, moved his staff to the new facility. That small studio was sufficient for a couple of years, but the company eventually outgrew it, and Walt had to look elsewhere. The original Disney Studio had been in the back half of a real estate office on Kingswell Avenue in Hollywood, but soon Walt had enough money to move next door and rent a whole store for his studio. From then on, he saw to it that he owned everything that he made. It was a painful lesson for the young cartoon producer to learn. On rereading his contract, Walt realized that he did not own the rights to Oswald-the distributor did. Within a year, Walt made 26 of these Oswald cartoons, but when he tried to get some additional money from his distributor for a second year of the cartoons, he found out that the distributor had gone behind his back and signed up almost all of his animators, hoping to make the Oswald cartoons in his own studio for less money without Walt Disney. To star in this new series, he created a character named Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Walt Disney made his Alice Comedies for four years, but in 1927, he decided to move instead to an all-cartoon series. ![]() ![]() ![]() “For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request,” His family said in a released statement. Neil Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, after complications from cardiovascular procedures at the age of 82, leaving behind an amazing legacy. Armstrong even testified before Congress when President Obama canceled the Constellation program in 2010. He stayed out of the limelight and avoided the press at all costs, but still stayed committed to space exploration. Armstrong would live out the rest of his years with her. He got remarried that same year to Carol Held Knight. Of course, this is a fictionalized movie, but it is based off Neil Armstrong’s official biography First Man: The Life of Neil A. He’s not emotionally available, and Janet shoulders the burden of raising the children. In the film, it’s no secret that Janet and Neil have a troubled relationship. In 1994, Janet and Neil got divorced after 38 years of marriage. First Man explores how Armstrong dealt with the deaths of so many of his colleagues in the Space Race, so there’s no doubt that this was a difficult task for him to undertake. He served on the presidential commission as vice chairman and looked into what caused this heartbreaking tragedy. In 1986 when the Challenger tragically exploded, Armstrong returned to help NASA in its time of need. That period of Armstrong’s life was tumultuous. He served as the chairman of Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc. He taught eager space enthusiasts for eight years and then went back into his field. He remained at NASA for two more years as the deputy associate administrator for aeronautics before deciding to pursue a career as a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati in 1971. He sons, Rick and Mark Armstrong, were still young, so he continued to help raise them with his wife Janet. After his historic first step, he hung up his spacesuit for good. In fact, Apollo 11 was Armstrong’s last foray into space. But what happened next? First of all, Armstrong never went back to the Moon. The final scene of First Man shows us Armstrong and his wife Janet separated by glass, dramatically pressing their hands together. (Warning, mild spoilers for First Man ahead.) What happened after the credits roll? A lot. But Armstrong was only nearing his 39th birthday after the moon landing. The movie tells Armstrong’s story from his days as a test pilot in 1962 up until Apollo 11 safely landed back on Earth in 1969. Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the moon and uttered perhaps the most quotable quote of the 20th century: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Out this weekend, the new film First Man finds the legendary astronaut is portrayed by Ryan Gosling. First Man brings the tragic but inspiring story of one of America’s greatest heroes to life. ![]() Hidden singles are in fact naked singles that occur once you add a new digit to a row or a column. If when you cross the rows and columns you find a blank space with only one possibility, you have found a naked single and the right answer for that cell. Write down every possibility for each cell. The difficulty of the puzzle varies according to the number of filled cells at the beginning of each game. The game starts with the grid partially filled and the player must find the remaining numbers based on the position of those already given. The goal of the game is to fill each cell with a number from 1 to 9 making sure there are no repeated digits in any column or row in the grid nor within the square itself. ![]() Sudoku is played on 9 x 9 grid, divided into 3 x 3 squares separated from each other by thicker lines. Later, newspapers all over the world started including these games in their publications. ![]() Nikoli’s sudoku version later spread throughout the world thanks to Wayne Gould, a retired Hong Kong judge who first encounter the game in a Tokyo bookstore and later published a book with his own puzzles in the UK and the US. As the game’s popularity increased in Japan, its designation was eventually shortened to include only the characters for number (数 - Su) and single (独 - Doku), resulting in the name by which we now know it, Sudoku. The second and most import rule is that no more than 32 numbers out of the 81 can be given away, as the goal becomes too easy to reach above this threshold. The given numbers in the beginning must create a pattern in their allocated squares to make the game more visually appealing to the players. Nikoli also introduced two new rules that became essential to the game as we know it today. Its widespread popularity didn’t come until the game reached Japan in 1984 when Nikoli published it under the name “Suuji wa dokushin ni kaguru” (The numbers must remain single) in the Monthly Nikolist Magazine. The modern Sudoku as we know it nowadays, however, using digits instead of the Latin alphabet, was most likely the creation of Howard Garns, an architect from Indiana who first published his version of the game in the Dell Magazines in 1979. The basis of the game originated in Switzerland in the 18th century when the mathematician Leonhard Euler developed the concept of Latin Squares used in statistical analysis. The Judiciary Committee started scrutinizing Bragg’s investigation of the former president in the weeks that preceded his indictment. Envisioned by Swiss-born Bulova engineer Max Hetzel, the original Accutron, aka the Accutron Spaceview 214, was the world’s first fully electronic watch - distinguished from Hamilton’s invention by the small but significant fact that the latter incorporated mechanical elements like a balance wheel in addition to the battery’s electrical current to drive the movement. Hamilton’s competitor, Bulova, at the time headed by World War II hero General Omar Bradley, who served as Chairman of the Board from 1958 to 1973, upped the ante in 1960. The Ventura, which first gained fame when it was worn by Elvis Presley (below) in his 1961 film Blue Hawaii, remains a staple of Hamilton’s lineup, but its original movement has long been rendered obsolete, replaced by mechanical or quartz-driven counterparts. It was the first battery-powered watch and the first watch to use electric power in its movement. That watch’s movement, Caliber 500, used a battery, magnets, and an electronic coil rather than a mainspring to drive the gear train and balance wheel. ![]() It was Hamilton, an American watchmaker, that led the way with the original Ventura in 1957. The 1950s were an era of bold experimentation in the science of timekeeping as watch manufacturers began shifting their focus - from the traditional, all-mechanical style of watchmaking that had dominated since the 19th Century, to new inventions that would incorporate the electronic technology that was increasingly finding its way into people’s daily lives. In the postwar decades of the 1950s and 1960s, with the dawning of a new technological era of timekeeping, the company put forth some of its most memorable and influential efforts. Throughout this history, Bulova had developed a well-earned reputation for innovating and for adapting to the changing needs of its customers and the evolving trends of the market. One of the most important historical watch brands with roots in the United States, the company is today part of the Japanese Citizen Group and can look back upon a history littered with milestones: the first full line of ladies’ watches, the first television commercial, some of the earliest wristwatches produced for American troops during World War II, and one of the earliest celebrity watch endorsements - by none other than legendary aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh, for its Lone Eagle watch - to name just a few. The history of the Accutron brand begins with the Bulova Watch Company, f ounded by Bohemian immigrant Joseph Bulova (above) in New York City in 1875.
